Flatbed Towing for AWD, Automatic, Luxury, and Electric Vehicles
Learn when a flatbed is the safer recovery method, which vehicle details dispatch needs, and what owners should check before loading an AWD car or EV.
Modern vehicles combine automatic transmissions, electronic parking brakes, low bodywork, all-wheel-drive systems, and high-voltage components. A towing method that was acceptable for an older two-wheel-drive car may be unsuitable for a newer vehicle.
A flatbed carries the vehicle with all wheels off the road. That often reduces driveline rotation and road contact, but it does not make every loading method automatically safe. The owner’s manual and manufacturer recovery procedure remain the primary instructions for a specific model.
Why driven wheels matter
When wheels remain on the road during towing, parts of the transmission or driveline may rotate. On some vehicles, lubrication depends on the engine or an electric pump being active. AWD and permanent 4WD systems can also couple front and rear axles in ways that make two-wheel towing unsuitable.
The correct procedure varies widely. Some manufacturers permit limited-distance towing at a restricted speed; others require all wheels to be lifted. Do not rely on a generic rule or on the position of the gear selector alone. Give the operator the exact make, model, year, and drivetrain whenever possible.
Electronic parking brakes and locked wheels
A depleted 12-volt battery can prevent an electronic parking brake from releasing or stop the transmission entering neutral. Collision damage may also jam a wheel. Dragging a locked wheel onto a deck can damage tyres, suspension, bodywork, or the deck itself.
Tell dispatch how many wheels turn and whether steering works. Operators may need wheel skates, dollies, a low-angle deck, or manufacturer-specific power-release steps. Never crawl under a vehicle or improvise a parking-brake release at the roadside.
Special precautions for electric and hybrid vehicles
An EV has both a high-voltage traction system and a conventional low-voltage electrical system. A flat traction battery is different from a disabled 12-volt battery, and neither should be treated as permission to connect equipment to an unverified point. Follow the manual and use only marked terminals when qualified to do so.
After a serious collision, flooding, underbody impact, smoke, popping sounds, unusual heat, or a chemical smell, keep people away and contact emergency services. Tell responders it is an electric or hybrid vehicle. A damaged high-voltage battery can present risks that continue after the initial incident.
Low-clearance and luxury vehicle loading
Sports cars, vehicles with air suspension, long front overhangs, and low battery enclosures can scrape on a steep deck transition. The operator may need approach ramps, cribbing intended for recovery work, or a lower loading angle. Tell dispatch about modified suspension, splitters, side skirts, and ground-clearance concerns before the truck arrives.
A winch cable should attach only to an approved recovery point. Transport tie-downs should secure the vehicle using the method specified for the model and carrier. Avoid authorizing hooks around suspension arms, steering parts, axles, or battery structures unless the manufacturer explicitly identifies them as approved points.
Questions to ask the carrier
Before accepting service, ask the following questions and record the answers in the booking or message thread.
- Will all four wheels be carried off the road?
- Can the deck and approach equipment accommodate the vehicle’s clearance?
- How will locked wheels or a disabled electronic parking brake be handled?
- Which recovery and tie-down points will be used?
- Are loading, tolls, waiting, special equipment, and unloading included in the estimate?
